Have you heard of Annie Malone? My first time learning of her was during a discussion with Sam Ennon, president of BOBSA (Black Owned Beauty Supply Association).
Naturally, I became interested in learning more because of my own fascination with the historically black elite. However, not much could be found.
Thursday evening, I attended a lecture presented by Chajuana Trawick, Ph.D., entitled ”The History of Annie Malone and Poro College: Building an Empire of Beauty in St. Louis, Missouri from 1902-1930.”
In short, Annie Malone was the pioneer of black beauty culture. She built a massive commercial and educational enterprise focused on African American cosmetology.
What I find interesting about her is that she preceded Madam C.J. Walker. In fact, Walker was Malone’s employee, her sales agent. Given that Malone died 38 years after Walker, it’s interesting how history, the media, and good PR can run its course.
Below are a few of Malone’s advertisements from the St. Louis Argus Newspaper.

Annie Malone’s enterprise was centered around cosmetology for African-Americans. Like much of what I’m currently learning, she dispelled myths about black hair and introduced new beauty techniques. She emphasized cleanliness and sanitation in beauty regimens.
Below is a photo of her enterprise headquarters, Poro College. There was also a rooftop garden where she used to host parties and such. Isn’t it just elegant?!

Imagine that, a multimillionaire…talk about a grand hustle!!!
