They Call Me Soror….

It’s been 10 years in the making… the “Curtain Call” of D.S. Drama Act III, Spring 2012.

The Delta Girl is one who has been given the opportunity of education and broad development: she is one who has enjoyed the privileges of culture and selected environment…it is pleasing to a heartfelt depth to see her not as self centered, nor desirous of selfish power, not wanting the plaudits of people, not wanting glory – but with a purpose which directs her activities and all that she may control toward lifting somebody else. – Soror Mary McCleod Bethune

Sunday’s Best: Plant with Purpose

I do not know any gardeners or farmers who plant seeds with no expectation of harvest. Do you?

Yesterday, I was reminded that “growth is evidence of life.” Anything that’s not growing is dead! So, how can we expect to grow if we’re not planting, and planting with purpose?

plant with purpose

As I plant seeds to harvest a lifestyle that is designed with purpose and intention, one of my teachers instructed me to remember six words of significance regarding this process:

  • Prominence
  • Permanency
  • Positioning
  • Productivity
  • Perpetual
  • Prospering

I highlighted position and productivity because at this phase, it’s the most relevant to me. The blueprint has already been revealed to me, and the seeds have been planted (well most of them at least). But, the hard part is designing a strategy to stimulate growth of the seed.

Sure, it’s easy to say just water it; but, seeds need more than just water to grow. They require oxygen to germinate. Some seeds require the perfect amount of light, fertile soil, warm or cooler temperatures, etc.

So, I write this to encourage myself and others to lay the foundation first. Prepare the framework so that when the time is ripe, we can expect to reap what we have sown. It’ll happen! The seed will sprout; but, like planting, “we’ve got to go down, sometimes six feet under before we sprout and go up.”

Which one of the “Ps” is most relevant to you at this phase of your life?

Why Law School?

law school

A few weeks ago I attended NBLSA’s 44th Annual Convention in DC. NBLSA, the National Black Law Student’s Association, is an organization of which I’m very fond. As a law student at a PWI (predominantly white institution) NBLSA instills excellence and service, and it provides the venue to build relationships with like minded people who look like me. Last year, during my second year of law school, I served on NBLSA’s executive board as the 2010-2011 National Director of Education and Career Development.

Julie, pictured below, served in the same position the year after me. In the photo, it was our first time meeting after having several late night chats about the position, career goals, and other girl talk. So naturally, when we spotted each other, we rushed with hugs.

As mentioned in a previous post, as an urban beauty, we are called to serve and to pay it forward. Though I knew what Julie looked like, there’s nothing like meeting people in person. I appreciated the opportunity to become involved with an organization that helps black law students navigate the law school experience, because it’s doozy.

Julie and I just blog posing.

The convention was great! I’ve attended all three years, and it was a great way to culminate my law school career.

In this video, I give my three (3) primary reasons for pursing a law degree.

Sunday’s Best: Favorite Blogs Edition

My schedule is becoming tight as I continue the last leg of my law school career. With that, the opportunities to snap photos of myself lately have been a complete fail. I do, however, want to continue to give you my Sunday’s Best posts. Some featuring me, others may not. Today, I want to highlight two of my favorite blogs whose style I simply adore.

First up, Jessie of Adore Daily. I’ve been viewing Jessie’s blog for almost three years now. Her creativity, her ability to mix high and low end items, and her photos never ceases to amaze me.

favoriteblogsfavoriteblogsfavoriteblogsNext up, Soraya of Style Is My Thing. Soraya is a blogger based in the UK. She’s a fairly new blogger, but her style and lavish likes keep me mesmerized. You can see for yourself.
